Itinerary
We met our guide at Lake Port in Ksamil and climbed aboard his pride and joy, a traditional style mussel boat which took us across Lake Butrint. He explained in perfect English how the mussels are grown and harvested. The location is very beautiful as the lake is protected and birds and fish are plentiful. Indeed, the only human presence is local fisherman using handlines with mussel shacks dotting the shoreline. We took turns to clean the mussels and learned about removing the ‘beard’ from each shell. Shortly we arrived on the far shore and were greeted with a warm welcome from locals who had set a table in the shade. Wafting delicious smells were in the air. Wine and cold water was served and a fine feast of mussels was presented. A plate of grapes and more wine followed. Our only company, a dog and a cat who slept at a polite distance. There was adequate washing and toilet facilities. It was a perfect afternoon with the sun setting on our return, offering us a glorious sunset for dessert. We went with another couple and all agreed it was very good value for money and something very different and quite unique. Certainly not hackneyed tourism. I thoroughly recommend this tour, educational and gastronomic. You almost feel you are experiencing what the ancients enjoyed. You can’t put a price on pure, delicious simplicity.

Our day began in Sarandë, where we were picked up and transported in a private vehicle toward the start point of our walking tour. The short drive gave us glimpses of the Ionian coastline and the surrounding hills, setting the stage for what was to come.
We started our walk along a quiet, elevated coastal path overlooking both the Ionian Sea and Butrint Lake, with Corfu Island visible in the distance. This trail, once heavily guarded during the communist era, still holds reminders of the past—massive artillery bunkers hidden in the terrain. The guide shared fascinating stories about Albania’s military history, bringing the landscape to life.
Partway through, we paused for a coffee or refreshment at a small local bar nestled in a village with panoramic views—an ideal moment to soak in the serenity and take photos.
Our journey continued to the centuries-old St. George Monastery, a peaceful and well-preserved site dating back to the 16th–17th century. Its strategic hilltop location offered one of the most stunning views in the region, making it a highlight of the walk.
After exploring the monastery and taking in the landscape, we returned to Sarandë filled with fresh air, stories, and a deeper appreciation for Albania’s layered history and natural beauty.

We departed from Sarandë in the morning, heading inland for a scenic 1 hour and 15-minute drive to the UNESCO-listed city of Gjirokastër. Known as the “city of stone,” it felt like stepping into a living museum, where cobbled streets and slate-roofed houses preserve the spirit of the Ottoman era.
Our first stop was the imposing Castle of Argjiro, perched above the city. Dating back to the 12th–13th century, the castle told stories of centuries past—from pre-Ottoman defenses and Ottoman rule, to its role during WWII and the communist era. We explored the Gun Museum housed within the castle walls, filled with relics from Albania’s military Next, we wandered through the Old Bazaar—colorful, alive, and rich with handmade souvenirs, traditional costumes crafted by local women, and authentic Albanian goods. There was time to enjoy lunch or a coffee while soaking in the atmosphere and mountain views.
We also visited the beautifully preserved Skenduli House, a true example of Ottoman architecture and family life in past centuries.
As we made our way back to Sarandë around 4:00 p.m., the day felt like a window into another time—an unforgettable blend of history, culture, and charm.

Our experience began in Sarandë, where we were picked up and driven through the countryside toward one of Albania’s most notable wine-producing family estates. The 30-minute journey offered scenic views, building anticipation for what was to come.
Upon arrival, we stepped into the warm hospitality of a family-run canteen with a long tradition in wine and raki making. The hosts shared their story—how their journey began with just a few hectares of vineyard and grew into one of the region’s most respected wine producers.
We sampled a variety of traditional drinks: robust local rakis (including walnut, fruit, and Oregon infusions), along with white, red, and rosé wines made from Merlot, Cabernet, and the native Shesh grape. Each sip was paired with fresh, seasonal snacks—cheeses, homemade jams, vegetables, and rich olive oil—all grown and prepared at the “ISAK” Greenhouse.
As we tasted, traditional Albanian music filled the air, creating a lively, authentic atmosphere. Whether sipping slowly or joining in on the fun, everyone left with a smile—and a deeper connection to Albanian culture.
We returned to Sarandë satisfied and uplifted by the flavors, hospitality, and stories of the region.

Soon we arrived at the entrance to the Blue Eye—an enchanting natural spring tucked away in a protected forest. The 15-minute walk to reach it was serene, shaded by trees and alive with birdsong. We met our guide just outside the center of Saranda and were introduced to our powerful 450cc quads, ready to take on the wild side of southern Albania.
After a quick briefing, helmets on, and engines roaring, we followed our guide into the countryside. The route was stunning, with rocky trails, olive groves, and incredible views over the Ionian Sea.
As we climbed higher, the dusty paths gave way to remote villages and lush landscapes.
We stopped at several viewpoints to take photos, catch our breath, and soak in the panoramic beauty. The guide was friendly, knowledgeable, and made sure everyone felt safe and comfortable throughout.
At one point, we paused by a natural spring where some took a refreshing dip—so bring your swimwear just in case. Whether you’re looking for a rush of adrenaline or a chance to connect with nature, this ride offered the perfect balance.
